Louis and Claudia arrived in a remote Eastern European village, and it is not what they expected. Unlike New Orleans, the people in the village openly believed in vampires, calling Louis and Claudia “devil” and “monster.” The two arrived at a farmhouse, and the innkeeper led them to a room where they found crucifixes and garlic all around, showing how fearful the villagers were about vampires.

The two met Morgan, an English traveler who was mourning the death of his wife, Emily. Morgan told them that when he’d visited a nearby village with Emily, they had witnessed something disturbing: the villagers had dug up the body of a woman who had been buried six months earlier, and somehow, her body was still warm. The villagers drove a stake through her heart and decapitated her, believing she was a vampire. The next day, Emily was found dead outside the inn, and Morgan was convinced the villagers killed her out of suspicion and fear. Morgan begged Louis to help him save Emily’s body before the villagers could desecrate her, too.

Soon after, Morgan drunkenly fell asleep, and the innkeeper insisted that Louis and Claudia leave, threatening them with a stake. She warned them that the villagers were hunting more vampires and the situation would soon become violent. When Louis forced her to tell him where the vampires could be found, she pointed them north toward the ruins, leaving Claudia and Louis to go investigate.
