Julie of the Wolves is a children's novel written by Jean Craighead George and published in 1972. It follows the experiences of a native Alaskan girl-Julie/Miyax-through a series of difficult life transitions, including the death of her mother, the death of her father, an unhappy stay with her aunt, a marriage at thirteen to an alcoholic, abusive husband, and an episode of sexual assault. Miyax eventually decides to abandon Alaska and make her way to San Francisco, but finds herself lost and starving alone in the wilderness. It is at this point that she encounters a pack of wolves which she eventually learns to coexist with. George took a trip to Alaska with her son where she wrote an article on wolves and saw a solitary native girl. These two aspects of the trip combined to inspire the book. The novel was awarded the Newbery Medal.
