Looking Backward: 2000-1887 is a utopian science fiction novel by Edward Bellamy, first published in 1888. The novel tells the story of Julian West, a young man who falls into a deep sleep in 1887 and wakes up in the year 2000 to find that the United States has been transformed into a socialist utopia. Bellamy wrote Looking Backward in response to the social and economic problems of the Gilded Age, and the novel became one of the most influential works of utopian fiction in American history.
