Summarizing each section of an epic enhances students’ comprehension and enjoyment of rich but complex texts. By keeping a running summary, students are able to break a complex text into manageable parts and refer to their own notes to make sense of plot events. Students will use this worksheet to summarize The Odyssey as they read. They will write down the main idea and key details of each book, create a brief summary, and then further their textual understanding by drawing conclusions about how the book works within the larger narrative. Pass out this worksheet before students begin reading Book 1.
