Overview

On the Beach, a 1957 novel by British author Nevil Shute, is a post-apocalyptic work that explores the effects of nuclear war on humanity. The novel is set in Australia in the aftermath of a nuclear war that has wiped out all life in the northern hemisphere, and follows a group of people as they confront their impending deaths from radiation sickness. As they face the certainty of their impending doom, Shute explores the human response to extinction, contemplating morality, love, and the fragility of life. On the Beach was adapted into a film by Stanley Kramer in 1959.
