Overview

Persepolis is a collection of autobiographical comics about the life of Marjane Satrapi before and after the Iranian Revolution. Originally published as the first two parts of a four-part series in France between 2000–2003, Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood follows in the footsteps of the influential graphic novel Maus by using the format to depict and discuss serious historical events. Significantly, Persepolis is narrated by a woman whose perspective on the repressive Iranian regime is informed by her own persecution. It adapted into a film of the same name in 2007. In 2024, Persepolis and its sequel, Persepolis 2, were named to the 100 Best Books of the 21st Century by the New York Times.

In an interview in the Guardian in 2024, Satrapi said that Persepolis was meant to make Westerners aware of the humanity of the Iranian people, to realize, in her words, “Oh, they’re actually human beings like us.” After a successful career as a writer and filmmaker based in France, Marjane Satrapi died in 2026 at the age of 56.
