Overview

We Have Always Lived in the Castle is a 1962 gothic novel by Shirley Jackson. It was her final novel before her death in 1965. Blending mystery and psychological horror, the text explores themes of isolation, classism, and patriarchal oppression. The tale is told from the perspective of eighteen-year-old Mary Katherine (“Merricat”) Blackwood, one of the few surviving members of the wealthy Blackwood family after the others were poisoned six years prior. She and her older sister, Constance, live with their Uncle Julian in the family estate, ostracized by wary villagers who believe the murders were committed by Constance. The novel was adapted into a film in 2018 starring Taissa Farmiga, Alexandra Daddario, and Sebastian Stan.
