Overview

James Joyce’s short story “Eveline” tells the story of nineteen-year-old Eveline Hill who grapples with the decision to either flee with her lover to Buenos Aires or stay in Dublin and take care of her abusive father. “Eveline” is part of Joyce’s Dubliners, a collection of fifteen short stories set in Dublin, which was first published in 1914. “Eveline” and the fourteen other short stories offer a realistic depiction of what life was like for the Irish middle class in the early 20th century.
