Valley of the Dolls came out this day in 1966, and almost instantly became a best-seller. Everyone read the book; it became a film inside a year; for whatever reason, the story of three girls who found their way into showbiz in the ’40s, rose to fame, and came to rely on “uppers,” sleeping pills, and diet pills—which they called “dolls”—hit a nerve.
