“Perhaps the Sun was supposing that after many years, and after many changes, Josie and Rick might once again meet as the Coffee Cup Lady and Raincoat Man had done.”

This quotation takes place towards the beginning of Part 6, the book’s final part, when Klara and Rick are talking alone in the driveway. Klara seeks confirmation from Rick that he and Josie do still love each other, so that her promise to the Sun will not have been a lie. She realizes, though, that the Sun must understand the way things worked out, and is teaching Klara herself a lesson about the changeable nature and ultimate endurance of love. This quote recalls one of Klara’s first observations about just how complicated love can be when referencing the meeting of Coffee Cup Lady and Raincoat Man. When Klara witnessed their reunion early in the story, she had difficulty understanding the emotions of the two people—now, after living with people for many years, Klara appears to understand how one can feel both happiness and pain at the same time. The quote shows how much she has grown in her understanding of love and people. She takes comfort in thinking that Josie and Rick may one day have a similar reunion in the future.
