Unbroken is a nonfiction work by Laura Hillenbrand that was first published in 2010 with the full title of Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption. It is a biography of American World War II hero Louis “Louie” Zamperini focused mainly on the war years of 1941 to 1945, when Louie was in the U.S. Army Air Forces—first as a bombardier, then as a castaway, and then as a Japanese prisoner of war. However, Unbroken also describes the post-war years and the psychological toll of war took on veterans such as Louie.
