Overview

“Lenore” is a poem by Edgar Allan Poe that was first published in its present form in 1843. The poem centers on a subject that Poe wrote about frequently in his career: the premature death of a beautiful young woman. In this case, the young woman is Lenore, whose name Poe fans will recognize from his 1845 poem, “The Raven.” Just as in this poem Guy de Vere mourns the loss of his wife, so too does the speaker of “The Raven” feel “sorrow for lost Lenore.” The two Lenores may or may not be the same, but regardless, their shared name is certainly suggestive.
