Overview

Creating visual symbols to represent complex ideas can help solidify and deepen
comprehension. Students will work in a group using this worksheet to create a visual
literary map that explores how certainty and doubt affect a character’s choices, ideas,
and actions. Pass out the worksheet after students have finished reading Act 4. Divide
students into small groups and assign each group one of the following characters from
Hamlet: Hamlet, Claudius, Gertrude, Polonius, Horatio, Laertes, or Ophelia. Review the
instructions as a class. Students can complete their maps using art or presentation
programs on a computer or, if computers are not available, supplies such as paper
and colored pencils or markers. Allow groups time to work on the project on a regular
basis as reading continues. This activity ends with groups presenting their finished
maps to the class.
