Edward is the eldest son of Richard Plantagenet, the duke of York. When his father dies, Edward takes up his pursuit of the Crown. He initially proves himself to be an effective leader, helping to defeat Margaret’s army and thereafter claiming the throne for himself. However, Edward’s newfound power goes straight to his head and leads him immediately into trouble. His biggest mistake is to marry Lady Grey after he has sent Warwick to broker a marriage agreement with the king of France. Not only does he undermine Warwick’s efforts, but he also infuriates King Louis, and both men take up arms against him. Meanwhile, Edward’s power trip leads him to disrespect his brothers, both of whom rankle when he insists that, as king, he can do anything he wants. Edward’s missteps cause him to lose the Crown temporarily, and though he initially seems content with his demotion back to duke, his followers soon convince him to retake the throne from Henry. Though he demonstrates the strategic skill to take the throne not once but twice, Edward remains ignorant to threats in his closest circle. The audience can already see that he is no match for the conniving ambition of his youngest brother, Richard.
