First published in Spanish in 1941 in the book Ficciones, “The Garden of Forking Paths” was among the first of Argentine literary master Jorge Luis Borges’s works to be translated into English, in 1948. The winner of the 1961 Prix Internationale, Borges, also a poet and essayist, was influenced by and has been often compared to James Joyce. “The Garden of Forking Paths” combines elements of wartime spy thrillers, science fiction, and philosophy, examining the idea of multiple realities and suggesting that at moments of decision, each possible choice becomes the start of a different path of outcomes.
