Paul  

A young boy and the protagonist, who has become an adolescent by the story’s end. Paul is unusually intense for a child. He is focused and determined to the point of obsession. Paul exhibits adult-like behavior, such as betting on horse-races, which contrasts with his gentle demeanor and childish language.

Paul’s Mother (Hester) 

Paul's mother and the mistress of a fine home. Paul’s mother worries over and cares for her children, but she does not love them. Despite her seemingly pleasant middle-class life, Paul’s mother constantly feels that she does not have enough money to maintain her lifestyle.

Oscar Cresswell 

Paul's wealthy uncle and Paul’s mother’s brother. Uncle Oscar learns of Paul’s betting on horses with Bassett and eventually joins them in their endeavor. Oscar is keenly aware of his sister’s money problems and helps Paul direct some of his winnings toward his mother.  

Bassett 

The young gardener for Paul's family and former personal servant to Uncle Oscar during the war. Bassett is a simple man, religious and somewhat naïve. He and Paul form an unlikely partnership betting on horse-racing.  

Paul's Father 

A man who is mostly absent from the story and from Paul’s life. He enjoys expensive things and works in town. 

Joan

One of Paul's two sisters. Joan is annoyed with Paul's rocking-horse riding. 

Nurse 

The nanny for Paul and his sisters. She notices Paul's frantic riding on his rocking-horse early in the story.
