Hills Like White Elephants
“Hills Like White Elephants” is one of Hemingway’s best-known short stories. It follows a conversation between a young couple, in which the unnamed man pressures his girlfriend to get an abortion. Like “The Snows of Kilimanjaro,” it explores the difficulties and heartbreaks that are prevalent in intimate romantic relationships.
A Farewell to Arms
A Farewell to Arms is one of Hemingway’s most popular novels. Set during the First World War, the novel follows an American lieutenant serving in the Italian Army. Like “The Snows of Kilimanjaro,” it includes semi-autobiographical explorations of war and marriage.
The Great Gatsby
Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald were close friends, and “The Snows of Kilimanjaro” includes a character, Julian, who was inspired by Fitzgerald. Julian is deeply disappointed when he discovers that rich people are not a special, perfect race and are no different from the other classes. The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald’s most iconic work, introduces readers to the glitz and glamor of the upper-class world, only to expose the rich as lonely and morally bankrupt.
