Like most people who spend all their time on the Internet, scrolling through their various newsfeeds and dashboards in a desperate attempt to feel something, I love a good meme. It’s perhaps lucky, then, that someone in an office somewhere made the wholly misguided decision to give me access to the SparkNotes Twitter account. Now I turn literary references into memes and inflict them on the good people of Twitter, and nobody can stop me.
However! Any unlettered fool can retweet a joke simply to bask in that glorious social capital. It takes a real connoisseur of all things literary (or an 11th-grade English student) to actually understand the reference (and feel extremely smug about it).
