What began as a week-long observance in 1968 has since blossomed into a month-long celebration of the history, traditions, and achievements of Latinx cultures, beginning in mid-September.
Why mid-September? Well, because five Latin American countries celebrate their independence from Spain on the same day—the countries being Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, and the day being September 15th—so this was chosen as the celebration’s starting point. Latinx Heritage Month ends on October 15th and therefore encompasses Mexico’s Independence Day on September 16th, as well as Chile’s on the 18th and Belize’s on the 21st.
Clearly, there’s much to celebrate! So in honor of Latinx Heritage Month, here are six novels that center Latinx characters.
