Accio Every Magical Detail About The Cursed Child (So Far)

Unless you’ve been living under the Philosopher’s Stone for the past year and a half, you’ll no doubt have already (1) heard, (2) squealed over, and (3) shared with every other muggle you know the news that an actual Harry Potter sequel is coming out by way of The Cursed Child.

If you just spontaneously combusted like Fawkes, well, SAME. We’ll give you a sec to regroup.

The eighth story that seemed to be as elusive as a snitch for almost a decade is suddenly apparating into our lives this year, which means all the house points to YOU. We don’t want you to feel like a squib for missing out on any of the spellbinding minutiae, so treat this post like Devil’s Snare and let yourself sink right into all the exciting deets.

Who: J.K. Rowling teamed with writers Jack Thorne and John Tiffany to come up with the stage script. “We started talking about ideas and her generosity in the way she listened to what was inside our heads, and then fed into that with her brilliant mind, was incredible,” Tiffany said of the duo’s collaboration with the HP scribe.

Apparently, Jo was adamant from the start that she wasn’t into seeing another prequel join the fold. (probably ‘cause she’s working on her own such enchantment by way of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, hooray!) Otherwise, though, she was still the super duper generous QUEEN we all know and love and offered up her magical array of characters with an open mind and heart.

“Jo’s awesome, a lovely lady,” Thorne praised Rowling to The Independent. “To even let someone else write a word that Harry says is an incredibly generous act. She’s very trusting, and is prepared to say, ‘Nah, you’ve got it wrong.'” Taking up the mantle as she must, we see!

As for who’ll suit up in the fabled Gryffindor trio’s cloaks, actors Jamie Parker, Noma Dumezweni, and Paul Thornley will become Harry, Hermione, and Ron

What: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child takes us 19 years into the future when the Boy Wizard is a full grown-up with three Hogwarts-bound wizard BBs and a busy gig at the Ministry of Magic.

His legacy as “The Boy Who Lived” who saved the wizarding world from He Who Shall Not Be Named is still as recognizable as his lightning scar, though, and it seems his littlest child Albus Severus has a hard time coping with this hall-of-fame-style family history. Not a fan of riding cloak-tails, that one.

There’s also this epic teaser that’s got us confundus-spelled into even more rapt anticipation: “As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.”

When and Where: HPCC will premiere at Palace Theatre London in July, 2016, with preview performances showing in May! The play will run ‘til May, 2017. (BTW, it’s a two-part show that’s meant to be viewed in back-to-back binge-style.)

Why: When JoRow first confirmed the news that Harry Potter 8 was in fact not some deceptive spot of internet sorcery, she also explained that the reason it’s not a book this time is a surprise.

I am confident that when audiences see the play they will agree that it was the only proper medium for the story,” she wrote. And oh, it’s just the all-out “EPIC NATURE OF THE STORY” that justifies it being Part 1 and Part 2, but you already knew that.

How: For those who can’t make it to London in the next year-ish to see the plays (‘cause the ticket race has been more competitive than the tri-wizard tourny), there’s some good news in the Quibbler. The script for Cursed Child will also be released in book format on July 31, 2016!

And now we wait and secretly try to conjure Hermione’s time-turner because whyyyyy isn’t it July already so we finally have this Cursed Child in our lives?!
