Every Author on Your English Syllabus, Summed Up in a Single Sentence

Start the slide show

I’m just going to say it: in the past, there were too many people writing books. Now it’s the twenty-first century and it feels like I’m expected to know every struggling bard or wayward scribe who ever picked up a pen.

I mean sure, I’ve heard of Jane Austen, and I know about Shakespeare, and I’ve never actually read Albert Camus but I’m at least aware that he wrote things. But did you know there were more than three people writing books back in the day? Yeah. Welcome to my hell.

This slideshow will be your (sort of helpful, mostly just amusing) guide to (almost) every author your teachers want you to know about. By the end of it, some of you will be asking, “Elodie, did you really have to come for Nathaniel Hawthorne like that?” The answer is no. Did that stop me? Also no.
