SparkNotes Blog

SparkNotes Is Here to Save Summer Reading-Vote For Your Fave Book & We’ll Blog It!

As the late, great Jane Austen once said, it’s a truth universally acknowledged that SparkNotes are the single best study guides on the interwebs, an infinitely helpful source of info on symbolism, important quotes, plot summaries, and literary analysis for every book you could possibly imagine. (Ok, so that’s not an exact quote, but we’re, like, 84% sure that she mentioned it in Pride and Prejudice.)

But what Jane Austen didn’t know—and what you may not know either—is that we here at the SparkNotes blog are creating brilliant, funny-AF content that makes understanding your assigned reading even easier—it’s called Blogging the Classicsand it’ll help you ace English and LOL while you’re doing it.

So far, we’ve covered The Great Gatsby, Lord of the FliesHamlet, The Scarlet Letter, Catcher in the Rye, and more (you can see the complete list here, and at the bottom of this post)—and because we can pretty much read the minds of your English teachers, we’ve already got a To Kill a Mockingbird blog in the works.

But we’re not here just to #humblebrag—we want you to use the below poll to tell us what you’ve been assigned to read this summer, and we’re going to blog the ‘ish out of the book with the most votes!

Don’t forget to bookmark this page (and also this slideshow, which links to every single chapter summary individually), and the term “required reading” will never again strike fear into your heart!

All of these books, along with our Lit Guides and our No Fear Shakespeare translations, are available at Barnes and Noble stores and!
