Overview

J.D. Salinger actually wrote part of The Catcher in the Rye while serving in World War II. He chose to set his story in the late 1940s to early 1950s, revealing a post-World War II American society. The aftermath of World War II brought forth major transformations in American society in the areas of psychology, youth culture, the role of women, innovation, the economy, and civil rights. Use this handout prior to reading the novel to spark discussion and debate in your classroom and allow students to express personal experiences or prior knowledge related to the issues described.
