Authors carefully name their works to reflect a greater meaning or theme of the text. Understanding a text’s title strengthens a reader’s overall understanding of the story and its message. Students will use this worksheet to reread the passage in which Holden explains to Phoebe why he wants to be “the catcher in the rye” and then make connections between the novel’s title and one of its major themes.
