Overview

Close reading of specific parts of a text is a foundational skill that enhances comprehension. Students will use this worksheet to practice close reading, focusing on a challenging portion of The Crucible. Students will first summarize pages 33–36 of the play and then explain how Miller’s explication contributes to an understanding of the play and helps connect the play to the present day. Pass out this worksheet after students have read through page 36. Instruct students to first complete the summary portion of the exercise. Students should complete the rest of the worksheet after they have read the whole play.
