Overview

Identifying themes is crucial to the comprehension of any work and helps the reader better understand an author’s overall message and/or purpose. Students will use this worksheet to explore the numerous themes in The Crucible. Pass out the worksheet before reading begins so students can identify themes as they read. Halfway through the play, organize students into groups and have each group select one theme to continue to explore as they finish reading the play. Schedule time every few days for groups to meet and compare notes and add to their worksheet. At the play’s conclusion, each group will give a presentation about how their theme informs the play.
