Overview

Authors often use symbols to express meaning and reveal truths in a story. Students will use this worksheet to examine and explain specific symbols in Lord of the Flies, which will contribute to their understanding of symbolism as a literary device. They will identify important passages that give insight into the meanings of important symbols and write explanations of each. As a class, review the definition of symbol. At different points in the reading or at the end of the novel, students can compare their responses in small groups or as a class.
