I am proud that our country was created as the world’s first Muslim homeland, but we still don’t agree on what this means. The Quran teaches us sabar—patience—but often it feels that we have forgotten the word and think Islam means women sitting at home in purdah or wearing burqas while men do jihad.

In Chapter 7, Ghulamullah, an Islamic scholar, tries to shut down Khushal School because he argues it is haram, or forbidden by Islam. Throughout the book, opportunistic politicians distort Islamic law and the Quran to gain support in their bids to gain control. Malala believes that Ghulamullah’s claim is inaccurate, so she becomes frustrated with the number of people who agree with him. Although Malala loves the idea of a country based on her religion, the people who believe that Islam requires constant war and subjugation of women make peace impossible in Pakistan.
