Overview

Rebecca, first published in 1938, is a gothic novel by British author Daphne du Maurier. The novel tells the story of a young woman who marries a wealthy widower, only to find herself haunted by the memory of his first wife, Rebecca. Du Maurier masterfully weaves suspense and psychological tension, exploring themes of identity, jealousy, and the oppressive influence of the past. Rebecca was adapted into an Academy Award-winning film by Alfred Hitchcock in 1940 starring Joan Fontaine and Laurence Olivier.
