Summary

Conscience Does Make Cowards of Us All

Cameron is working at the aquarium that night, facing off with Marcellus, who has escaped his tank. Cameron falls and cuts his head while trying to corral Marcellus back into his tank. Tova arrives and takes over, guiding Marcellus back to safety. Once the octopus is back in his tank, she fetches a bandaid for Cameron. They introduce themselves and Cameron is shocked that she is the one that usually does this challenging job. Tova asks Cameron not to tell Terry that Marcellus is still escaping, and Cameron agrees. He quotes Hamlet, surprising Tova, who says it was one of her son’s favorite plays.

Expect the Unexpected

Tova recalls her childhood voyage from Sweden to the U.S., and a man on the boat called The Walrus who taught her card games and told her to expect the unexpected. She takes Cameron around the aquarium and corrects his cleaning methods, telling him to keep the door closed so Marcellus can’t escape the aquarium. Cameron asks why Marcellus leaves his tank and Tova guesses that he’s bored. She tells Cameron to leave him alone the next time he escapes, and decides that she will help Cameron and Marcellus become friends.

Day 1,329 of My Captivity

Marcellus touts his intelligence, recounting times when he could infer information about people that they didn’t know about themselves. He says that he can tell, by watching Cameron and Tova together, that they are somehow related.

Hard Left, Cut Right

Cameron invites Avery to come on a drive with him to find Simon Brinks’s supposed summer home—the information he gets from Jessica Snell turns out to be outdated, but he finds an address for Brinks’s summer home online. Avery can’t make it but invites him to go paddling with her another time, and Ethan comes with Cameron instead. On the ride, Cameron wonders how Brinks will receive him, if he will want a relationship with Cameron or dispute his claims of Brinks’s paternity. However, the address leads them to a dead end. On the way home, Ethan’s car gets stuck and Cameron teaches him how to maneuver out of the rut; the two men ultimately bond over the trip.

Day 1,341 of My Captivity

Marcellus claims that humans are the only species that make jokes, and recounts a time when he wished he could have laughed at an aquarium-goer's joke. Now, however, says he can feel himself approaching death.

A Three Martini Truth

Tova goes to Mary Ann’s farewell party at the Elland Chophouse, where she catches up with Mary Ann’s daughter Laura, who has a daughter and granddaughter of her own. The two have an awkward conversation until the rest of the party arrives, including Adam Wright and his partner Sandy Hewitt, who sit next to Tova. Sandy lets slip that Jessica Snell mentioned Tova is selling her house, and the whole table is surprised, challenging Tova’s decision. Adam gets drunk and begins talking about Erik, shocking Tova when he mentions that Erik had been out with a girl the night he died.
