Following the huge success of The Kite Runner, Hosseini’s debut novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns sold over one-million copies in its first week and was the top New York Times bestseller for fifteen consecutive weeks. The novel was a strong critical success as well, with its portrayal of the lead female characters—Mariam and Laila—drawing particular praise.
