Travis is a disciplined and responsible guide willing to go to any length to preserve the events in the timeline and ensure the company’s ultimate profitability. His disciplined nature and business mindset stand in contrast with the unpredictable nature of Eckels. Travis is committed to the rules of time travel, meticulously observing every possible precaution to avoid altering events in the past and thereby sidestepping potential government penalties. As a guide, he insists on total control and obedience. He is responsible for the lives under his guidance but also for the financial condition of the company and the future of the world.

This huge responsibility makes Travis act in ways that can seem harsh. He explains the consequences of violating rules in vivid detail so that travelers can also bear responsibility, and he describes the hunt in brutal language. He orders his wealthy guests around without concern for their status, and he does not forget his responsibilities even in times of crisis and fear. He takes charge when chaos breaks out, leaving Lesperance to handle Eckels, while continuing to control the hunt.

Once Eckels has broken the rules, Travis displays incredible anger. He wants to banish Eckels to the past as punishment for the insurance costs and need to report the incident to the government, but he stops at the pleading of Lesperance. Instead, he punishes Eckels by insisting that he dig the bullets from the dinosaur’s head.

On return, they discover that history has changed. Travis, driven by his commitment to maintaining the rules and his fear of disrupting the future, kills Eckels for the consequences that have unfolded.
