I imagine trusting a filmmaker to adapt your novel is a lot like leaving your kid with a new babysitter. They COULD be a murderer, but they could also be a really nice person—there’s just no way to tell.

As a novelist putting your work in the hands of a filmmaker, you hope for the best (i.e. a faithful retelling and box office success), but you expect the worst (an adaptation that makes a MOCKERY of your book and everything you stand for as a person). And while most of the following adaptations were beloved by film critics and audiences alike, there was one person who wasn’t happy: the original author.
