Overview
Learning how to effectively summarize enables students to quickly get to the core of a story and focus on the more meaningful elements of a text. Students will use this worksheet to record the most important aspects of 1984 as they read. Pass out the worksheet before students begin reading the novel. Remind students to only list characters and events that are essential to understanding the story and to refrain from including any personal opinions about the characters, setting, and events. Once students’ charts are completed, consider having students write a formal essay summarizing the novel.
