Overview

Authors use symbols to represent major themes, provide information about a character or event, and add layers of meaning to the text. Students will use this worksheet to explore how Orwell uses various symbols in 1984 and how those symbols shape a central message of the novel. Ask students to pay attention to when these symbols are introduced and why they think Orwell included them. Have students answer the question at the bottom of the worksheet after they have finished the novel and completed the chart.
