Overview
The poet Alexander Pope famously wrote, “The sound must seem an echo to the sense,” meaning that the style and sound of good writing reflects its meaning. Students will use this worksheet to explore the elegance of Austen’s diction and syntax and to make inferences about how her style helps shape her meaning. Pass out the worksheet at any time while students are reading Pride and Prejudice. Use the examples and students’ analyses to discuss the answer to this question as a class: In general, how does Austen’s style mirror and/or enhance her meaning?
