Overview
Reading verse such as that found in The Canterbury Tales can present difficulties even for proficient readers. Confusing syntax and archaic language are two of the most common reasons students struggle with this text. Use this worksheet to help students develop a strategy for rearranging verse into a more easily understandable sentence syntax. Demonstrate to students that they can identify the meanings of difficult words by doing simple translations into modern English. This will build confidence with reading verse and improve students’ understanding of and engagement with the text as a whole.
