Eveline Hill

A nineteen-year-old girl living in Dublin who is the story’s protagonist and titular character. Over the course of the text, Eveline grapples with the decision to either flee with her lover to Buenos Aires and start a new life or stay at home and take care of her abusive father.

Frank

Eveline’s lover and ticket out of Dublin. He is a sailor who wants Eveline to come with him to Buenos Aires but he ultimately sets sail alone after Eveline decides to stay at the last minute.

Eveline’s Father

The heroine’s abusive father. Eveline has fond memories of him from her childhood but he is often unkind and is violent towards his family. 

Eveline’s Mother

The heroine’s mother who dies before the events of the text take place. Eveline’s mother made Eveline promise that she would take care of the family and the house after the mother died. 

Ernest Hill

Eveline’s favorite brother who dies before the events of the story take place. Eveline remembers that Ernest was serious even as a child and was too old to play with them. Their father used to hit Ernest and Eveline’s other brother Harry. 

Harry Hill

Eveline’s other brother. He is a church decorator and is one of the two people that Eveline leaves a letter for when she thinks she is going to leave with Frank.
