Overview
Aldous Huxley set Brave New World more than five centuries into the future, but the novel satirizes Huxley’s own times. This handout gives students important background information about science and society in the early twentieth century, the era that Huxley was satirizing. The handout provides students with information that will help them better understand the humor in the novel, interpret Huxley’s prophecies, and evaluate the degree to which Huxley’s prophecies have come true. Use this handout to spark discussion and debate in your classroom and allow students to express personal experiences related to the issues described.
