Overview
John Steinbeck wrote Of Mice and Men as a statement about the struggle of migrant farm workers during and following the Great Depression in post–World War I America. These farm workers faced harsh, unforgiving conditions, often living in poverty and wandering from place to place looking for work. While being exploited by landowners for minimal pay, many workers found hope in the American Dream, even if most found such a dream unattainable. This handout gives students information about the impact of the Great Depression on American farmers and insight into the life of those who worked the farms. Use this handout to spark discussion and debate in your classroom.
