Overview
Analyzing characters’ interests, motivations, desires, and values is a way for students to access complex characters and gain insight into an author’s overall purpose. Students will use this worksheet to analyze Okonkwo and Nwoye, two major characters in Achebe’s Things Fall Apart, who have polarized values and beliefs despite being father and son. Students will read key passages from the novel that highlight these characters’ motivations and then complete a Venn diagram to visualize how Okonkwo and Nwoye are both similar and very different.
