Overview
Achebe’s choice to include so many Igbo proverbs in his novel Things Fall Apart was strategic and sends an important message about representing culture in literature. Students will use this worksheet to analyze the use of proverbs in the text by categorizing them according to their narrative function and purpose. Take time to review the description of proverbs at the beginning of the worksheet with the class. Encourage discussion about proverbs in the students’ cultures. You may wish to have students fill out the worksheet as they work through the novel or at the end of their reading.
