Jude Winston, Desiree’s daughter, strives to heal her family’s painful past and establish hope for the future. She shares characteristics of both her mother and her aunt. For example, she’s restless like her mother and as devoted to those she loves, but she’s studious and careful like her aunt, with whom she feels an affinity. Jude, in many ways, is the witness to her family’s entire story, and she is often the one to instigate healing. For example, she forces Kennedy to come face-to-face not only with the ways her mother lied to her, but also with aspects of her own white privilege that she’s been ignorant of. She also spurs Stella to get back in touch with Desiree, urging her to make right the estrangement that has torn the fabric of their family. Jude also works equally hard to support those she loves in her own life; for example, earning money for Reese’s gender-confirming surgery and working to understand his emotional needs. Jude’s love, devotion, strength, and clear-sightedness help to heal the past and provide a sense of hope for the future.
