Overview

The Fool in King Lear plays a role far more important than just making the king and readers laugh. Students will use this worksheet to do a deep dive into the Fool, one of King Lear’s most beloved and fascinating characters, through observation, interpretation, and creative thinking about casting. Pass out the worksheet after students have read the entire play. Students can work in pairs or small groups. Consider concluding this activity with a whole-class or small-group panel discussion of “Playing the Fool in King Lear.”
