Overview
The plot of King Lear wasn’t a new narrative when Shakespeare wrote the play. At the heart of this story is an old tale told over and over and over again. Shakespeare borrowed liberally from history, legend, and literature—a character from here, a plot twist from there—to cobble the plot of King Lear. This handout provides students with information about several possible sources Shakespeare used. Use this handout to spark discussion and debate in your classroom.
