Overview

Good writers carefully choose the setting of important scenes to add meaning to the action, and Shakespeare was no exception. Students will use this worksheet to explore one of the most famous settings in Shakespeare’s canon: the storm on the heath in Act 3 of King Lear. The storm is a reflection of Lear’s state of mind: torrential, chaotic, dangerous, isolating, and worsening over time. Pass out this worksheet as the class concludes Act 2 and ask students to locate, interpret, and then record specific imagery as they read Act 3. Students will likely observe that the storm passes, as do most of the main characters.
