Overview

One of the central motifs in King Lear is sight and blindness, both literal and figurative. Students will use this worksheet to better understand this archetypal motif and develop a list of words related to it. Pass out the worksheet as students begin to read the play. To help students get started, you might work through the first example in the chart together. Students may work independently, in pairs, or as a class. Start a list of related words on the board such as visual, vision, perception, reality, visibility, illusion, view, appearance, optics, ocular, disguise, optometry. Encourage students to use these words as they fill in this worksheet. After students complete the chart, they will discuss their understanding of the motif with a partner or small group.
