Overview

Shakespeare’s plays are divided into categories — comedy, tragedy, and history — and each type of drama has specific elements. Take a moment to review the definition and characteristics of Shakespeare’s comedies with students. Then have students use this worksheet to find and list the comic elements in Much Ado About Nothing.  Finally, have students respond to the prompt, taking a position as to whether the play is actually a Shakespearean tragicomedy. Students can write responses or discuss the prompt in small groups or as a class. Pass out this worksheet before students begin reading the play.
