Overview
Much Ado About Nothing draws much of its plot, humor, and drama from the rituals and social mores surrounding courtship, love, and marriage. This handout provides relevant background information about basic concepts that were crucial to the development of matrimonial relationships during the Renaissance. Use this handout to ensure that students understand how marriage rituals were both different in Renaissance times and were reflected in Shakespeare’s work. Discuss the content as a class, and allow students to offer personal opinions and make cross-curricular connections.
