The End of August, 1981
Director: Bob Graham
Notable Cast: Sally Sharp, David Marshall Grant

Now extremely difficult to find, this adaptation is the only film adaptation of The Awakening to receive a theatrical release. Critics noted that despite some good performances, without Chopin’s narration, the characters lose some of their depth, making the film melodramatic.

Grand Isle, 1991
Director: Mary Lambert
Notable Cast: Kelly McGillis, Adrian Pasdar

This adaptation was a made-for-TV movie produced by McGillis herself. While The Los Angeles Times found it sophisticated, pushing the boundaries of what a television release film could be, Time Out felt that it was a self-indulgent work on McGillis’s part, that focused more on herself than the story.
